Antonine House Residents Achieve French Qualifications

At Meallmore’s Antonine House Care Home in Bearsden, age is no barrier to education. Residents have recently achieved Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) National 2 certificates in French, demonstrating that it's never too late to embrace new challenges and passions.

Over a 12-week period, residents Myra (85), Norma (83), Joan (87), and Wallace (95) participated in a French language course facilitated by social enterprise Lingo Flamingo. This initiative reflects Meallmore’s dedication to providing person-centred care that enriches the lives of its residents.

A Tailored Approach to Language Learning

Lingo Flamingo specialises in delivering language courses within care settings, aiming to make learning accessible and enjoyable for older adults. The French course at Antonine House was designed with the residents' needs in mind, covering topics such as greetings, numbers, geography, hobbies, food, and nature. Assessment was conducted through ongoing observation, ensuring a supportive and pressure-free learning environment.

Myra Davidson, who previously earned a National 2 qualification in Italian, shared her experience:

“I enjoyed the class as the teacher took her time with us and taught us individual words rather than screeds. It was a great class, the company was even better, and we were always laughing. I’d like to thank Margot for all her hard work and for being so kind.”

A Joyous Graduation Celebration

To honour the residents' achievements, Antonine House hosted a graduation ceremony complete with caps, gowns, balloons, and refreshments. Family members, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate this milestone, highlighting the home's commitment to creating a vibrant and inclusive community.
