Mearns House Care Home in Newton Mearns Makes Dreams Come True

At Mearns House Care Home in Newton Mearns, we believe excellent care is about much more than meeting daily needs. It is about understanding the person behind the care plan - their memories, interests, routines, relationships, hobbies and the moments that still bring them joy.

That person-centred approach is at the heart of life at Mearns House. As a trusted care home in Newton Mearns, our team provides high-quality nursing care, dementia care, residential care and respite care in a warm, welcoming and purpose-built environment.

From our comfortable ensuite bedrooms and beautifully designed communal spaces, to our varied activities programme and close links with the local community, everything at Mearns House is designed to help residents feel safe, supported, valued and at home.

This year, our activities team introduced something very special to the home: a Wishing Tree.

A Wishing Tree Built Around Residents’ Lives and Stories

The Wishing Tree was introduced at the start of the year following ideas and feedback from residents during meetings at the home.

Every resident has the opportunity to write down a wish and place it on the tree. These wishes can be anything from a favourite activity, a special trip out, a meaningful meal, a creative project, or the chance to reconnect with a much-loved hobby.

Throughout the year, the Mearns House team selects one or two wishes each month to bring to life. Each wish is carefully reviewed to make sure it is safe, achievable and suitable for the resident, before colleagues work together to make it happen.

For our team, this is a beautiful example of what personalised care should look like. It gives residents a voice, celebrates individuality and creates meaningful experiences that reflect who they are.

As one of highest rated Newton Mearns care homes, we are proud to support residents not only through high standards of care, but through moments that bring happiness, confidence and connection.

From the Sea to the Skies: Residents’ Wishes Come True

Over the last few months, residents at Mearns House have gone from the sea to the skies as their wishes have become reality.

One of the first residents to have his wish granted was Ian McNaught, who wished to visit Deep Sea World. Ian chose his friend Donald to join him for the experience.

The pair travelled to North Queensferry, where they explored the wonders beneath the waves, took in the marine life and enjoyed a show and tell session. A highlight of the day was the much-loved seal show, which made the visit even more memorable.

Speaking about the experience, Ian said:

“I’ve always loved fishing and being by the sea, so getting the chance to visit Deep Sea World and see all the fish up close meant so much to me. The trip to North Queensferry was really special, and it’s a day I’ll never forget.”

For Ian, the trip was not just a day out. It was a chance to reconnect with a lifelong love of the sea, fishing and nature.

That is what makes the Wishing Tree so powerful. Each wish is personal. Each experience tells us something about the resident and gives us another way to celebrate their life story.

Animal Experiences and Special Days Out

Another memorable wish came from Joan McCallum, Maureen Orr and Isobel Campbell, who enjoyed a visit to Ingliston Country Club for a horse tour.

With the Grand National taking place on the same day, the visit had an added sense of excitement and atmosphere. The residents were able to enjoy the horses up close and share in the buzz of one of the biggest days in the racing calendar.

The animal theme continued when Alistair Mitchell, John Ferguson and Donald Mack wished to learn more about birds of prey.

The group visited Strathblane Birds of Prey, where instructor Graham shared his knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. The gents had the opportunity to see the birds up close, learn more about them, and even hold and fly them.

John said:

“Seeing the birds of prey up close was a truly unforgettable experience and one that I’ll always remember with great happiness.”

These experiences are exactly the kind of meaningful activities we aim to create at Mearns House. Whether residents are enjoying a local trip, exploring a long-held interest, or trying something completely new, our team works hard to make every experience feel special.

Celebrating Hobbies, Talents and Personal Passions

While many of the Wishing Tree experiences have involved trips and excursions, some wishes have focused on hobbies and passions closer to home.

John, a proud member of the Queen’s Park Camera Club, has spent a lifetime capturing the world through photography. For his wish, he asked for time to share his photo slides with others at Mearns House.

The session gave residents and colleagues the chance to experience the world through John’s eyes, while celebrating a talent and interest that has been part of his life for many years.

John said:

“Photography has always been a huge passion of mine, especially through my camera club, so having the chance to capture such amazing moments made the day incredibly special for me.”

Resident Donald joined the session and said:

“He has a terrific sense of colour… watching the slides makes me want to go to the places he’s photographed.”

This is a key part of life at Mearns House Care Home. We believe residents should continue to feel seen, heard and recognised for the people they are. Their hobbies, achievements, careers, families, friendships and passions all matter.

Whether someone is living with dementia, receiving nursing care, staying with us for respite care, or making Mearns House their long-term home, our approach remains the same: care should be personal.

The Wishing Tree has been brought to life by the creativity, care and dedication of our activities team, with support from colleagues across the home.

At Mearns House, our team understands that the little things often make the biggest difference. A favourite song, a familiar hobby, a trip to a meaningful place, a shared meal, or the chance to tell a story can all help residents feel connected to themselves and the people around them.

That is why activities are such an important part of life in our home. They support wellbeing, encourage social connection and help residents continue enjoying a sense of purpose and belonging.

Kirsty Craig, Care Home Manager at Mearns House, said:

“The Wishing Tree is something really special that we’ve introduced at the heart of our home. We invite every resident and their loved ones to take part - if there is something they’ve always wanted to do, see, taste, try, or experience, we suggest they write it down and place it on our tree.

“We love celebrating the passions, talents and life stories of the people who live with us, so getting to learn more about their wishes and then getting to make some of those come true is wonderful.

“This activity is all about creating joy, sharing experiences, and making meaningful memories together. It’s brought a real excitement to the home this year, and while not all residents get to take part in every wish, we all get to share the joy in hearing about it and discussing what we’ll do next.

“The activities team have done an incredible job creating this initiative and then working out how to make dreams come true - well done to all of them for their hard work and fairy dust!”
