Alderwood House Celebrates Very Good Inspection

Alderwood House Care Home in Dumbarton has received a Grade 5 – Very Good rating from the Care Inspectorate following an unannounced inspection.

The inspection recognised the quality of care, support and setting at Alderwood House, with particular praise for the home’s person-centred approach, respectful relationships and the support residents receive to build independence and confidence.

The result is a proud moment for everyone at Alderwood House and reflects Meallmore’s wider commitment to creating great places to live and work across Scotland.

A Specialist Mental Health Care Home in Dumbarton

Alderwood House is a purpose-built specialist care home in Scotland, providing personalised nursing care and support for adults enduring or recovering from mental health conditions.

The home focuses on helping residents restore confidence, develop life skills and live as independently as possible. This approach was highlighted during the inspection, with residents supported to take part in daily living tasks such as preparing meals and doing laundry.

These everyday moments matter. For many residents, independence is built through routine, confidence, encouragement and the chance to do things for themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

At Meallmore, care is not simply about support being provided. It is about helping each person build confidence, maintain dignity and continue making choices about their own life.

Person-Centred Care and Recovery

One of the most positive aspects of the inspection feedback was the recognition of the person-centred care experienced at Alderwood House.

Residents were able to talk about their Recovery Stars, sharing their progress and showing pride in how far they had come. This demonstrated how the home supports residents to recognise their own achievements and take ownership of their personal goals.

For residents, recovery and progress can look different for every person. It may be learning or relearning a daily living skill, building confidence in social situations, taking part in activities, developing routines or feeling more able to express choices and preferences.

This reflects Meallmore’s wider approach to [person-centred care], where support is shaped around the individual  their needs, their goals, their preferences and what matters most to them.

Kind, Visible and Respectful Support

Inspectors praised colleagues at Alderwood House for being visible, kind and respectful, recognising the dignity shown to residents throughout the home.

This reflects the culture the team has built together. In a specialist mental health care setting, strong relationships are essential. Residents need to feel listened to, understood and supported by people who know them well.

Colleagues at Alderwood House were also recognised for their knowledge and collaborative working with external professionals. This joined-up approach helps ensure residents receive the right support at the right time, with care shaped around their individual needs and goals.

These are the values that sit at the heart of Meallmore’s C.A.R.E values -creating environments of kindness, acting with accountability, recognising the contribution of colleagues and engaging in learning and improvement.

Positive Feedback from Residents, Families and Professionals

Feedback from residents, families and visiting professionals was overwhelmingly positive during the inspection.

This is an important part of the result. A care home is not judged only by what is seen during an inspection, but by the lived experiences of the people who live there, the families who trust the home and the professionals who work alongside the team.

At Alderwood House, the feedback reflected a home where residents feel supported and where families and professionals can have confidence in the care being provided.

For Meallmore, this aligns closely with the organisation’s wider vision to be Scotland’s most trusted care provider, consistently delivering excellent care in great places to live and work.

A Proud Moment for the Alderwood Team

Laura McNicol, Care Home Manager at Alderwood House, said:
